April 11, 2018 Wednesday Letter

Dear Parents & Guardians,

When a school community has engaged volunteers, amazing things happen for children. The students of De LaSalle are so fortunate to have the support of a truly wonderful group of volunteers working behind the scenes to do everything from raising money to helping in the lunchroom, working with students in the classrooms, and the list goes on! We cordially invite our school volunteers to a Volunteer Appreciation breakfast to be held in your honor on May 4, 9:00-10:00 AM. We truly hope you can join us, so we can thank you in person. Please R.S.V.P to Bonnie Ross at bross@delasallefm.org or call the school office.

Onto a more difficult topic, we live in an age where technology is impacting communication in many ways, both positively and negatively. While the benefits can be wonderful, the negative outcomes of technology and wide access to social media for young people has created a valid, growing concern. Children and adolescents can have experiences on social media and messaging that have both short-term and long-term negative impacts. Add to the mix that many young people may lack the social, emotional, developmental or intellectual ability to safely navigate the world of social media, and you create the potential for real and present danger. Cyber-bullying is a by-product of this digital existence, and one to which De LaSalle students are not immune. Parents and guardians need to be more vigilant than ever with daily monitoring of their child’s social media and messaging accounts to check for potentially dangerous or aggressive interactions. Please remember that our Parent-Student Handbook contains policies relating to social media use (including text messaging):

Students under the age of 18 are discouraged from using social media. In the event that a student’s social media post violates the philosophy, principles and policies of the school, affects the safe and orderly daily operation of the school, or causes an ethical or safety concern for any student, staff member or the school as an entity, the student shall be subject to disciplinary action to include possible expulsion. (Page 21)

Since social media and text messaging cannot be used on campus, this is a policy that covers events occurring outside of school that impact students in school as described. If at any time you or your child have concerns about cyber-bullying that involve another student at De LaSalle, please contact me. At the heart of our mission is the creation of a “…safe, supportive, and nurturing environment…”  Please assist us with our mission by making us aware of your concerns.

All the best,

Lori Riti
