August 16, 2017 Wednesday Letter

Dear Parents & Guardians,

It is always exciting to begin a new school year and we are off to a great start! We welcome our new and returning families and truly look forward to partnering with you to provide the best possible educational experience for your child. We also welcome our new and returning staff members. Joining us this year on the therapy team is Mrs. Megan Orbeck, who will work with students in the area of Social Communication. On the instructional staff, we welcome Mrs. Rebecca Detwiler, Mr. Simon Huebler, and Mrs. Sofia Kaklamanis. Mr. Jim Duke is also new on campus, working in maintenance. In the aftercare program, our new additions are Ms. Kaydi Archer and Coach Lydick. Finally, Ms. Lena Figueroa joins us as our Naples bus driver. You can learn more about our new and returning staff members on the De LaSalle website “About” page.

However exciting a new school year may be, it can also create stress for students and their families. We welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have or discuss your concerns. Many sources of stress can be eliminated with a quick phone call or email. We are always happy to hear from you and we are grateful for your heartfelt interest in your child’s education.

Here’s to a great year!

Lori Riti

SOLAR ECLIPSE – AUGUST 21– SCHEDULE CHANGED TO 12:15 DISMISSAL  (Excerpt from email on 8-11-17)

As you are probably aware, the U.S. will experience a solar eclipse on August 21st in the afternoon. The staff and administration of De LaSalle Academy have discussed and evaluated the potential challenges to keeping students safe during this event, especially when so many of our students have difficulty with impulse control. After considering many possible solutions, we have determined that the best course of action will be to dismiss all students from the campus at 12:15 on August 21st.  Our most important priority is to keep all students safe and dismissing students at 12:15 provides the most safety out of all the options we considered. Because all students will be dismissed, this also means there will be no afterschool care on August 21st.  Golf is cancelled for this day, but bowling will go on as scheduled. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we take your child’s safety very seriously and feel the risks outweigh the alternative.

Edsby is now live and ready for you to establish an account and have 24/7 access to your child’s grades, assignments, and general happenings at school. You should have received an email last week generated by the Edsby program. If you need assistance, please contact Sarah Barrow at Please see the enclosed letter for more information.

All calendar information regarding holidays, early dismissals, days with no school, special events, sports, and clubs will now be found on Edsby. (Lunch calendar will continue to be sent home monthly and also posted on the school website.)

If you would like to get a jump start on volunteer hours and work with the planning committee for this event, please join us on August 24 at 6:00 for a planning meeting.

Thank you to Mrs. Caroline Shucavage for volunteering again to manage the Box Tops program. The homeroom class that brings in the most Box Tops during the month of August will celebrate with a pizza party! Our goal this year is to raise $750 with this program.

PDQ gift cards are on sale in the school office. Cards are valued at $10.00 and sell for $7.00. Please see the enclosed order form for more information.

N.U.T. (No Uniform Today) Passes

Students can earn out-of-uniform “NUT” day passes a variety of ways. One way is to bring the empty Wednesday envelope back to school on Thursdays with the parent or guardian signature on the front of the envelope. We thank you in advance for ensuring that your child chooses clothing within the NUT day dress code in the handbook.

Bowling and Golf: Starts this week.

Performing Arts Club: Starts August 31. Please see the enclosed flyer for information about the club and how to sign up.
