 College Entrance and Placement Exams

  • The ACT test is a test often used by colleges to determine admission. Many colleges and universities require students to obtain a specific score to gain admittance to the school. The ACT contains four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—and an optional writing test. These tests are designed to measure skills that are most important for success in postsecondary education and that are acquired in secondary education. The score range for each of the four multiple-choice tests is 1–36. The Composite score is the average of the four test scores rounded to the nearest whole number. Check the admission requirements of the college(s) of interest to determine the scores necessary for admission.
  • The ACT test is designed for 10th, 11th, and/or 12th grade levels to provide schools with the data necessary to position students for success after high school.
  • You can register to take the ACT using the link below. Students who would like to suggest accommodations when taking the ACT should enter De LaSalle Academy’s high school code of 100210 and choose “Special Testing” when registering. An email will be sent to you with specific instructions after registering. Testing accommodation approval can take between 2 and 4 weeks so be sure to plan accordingly.

P.E.R.T. (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test)

  • The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) is a common placement test used to determine accurate course placement based on the student’s skills and abilities. The P.E.R.T. is aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies identified by Florida faculty as necessary for success in entry-level college credit coursework. The P.E.R.T. assessment tests in the following areas: mathematics, reading and writing. The P.E.R.T. is a requirement as part of admission to Florida SouthWestern State College. Scores from the P.E.R.T. helps to determine a student’s placement in English, math and reading courses.
  • Register to take the P.E.R.T. at Florida SouthWestern State College at
  • The cost of the P.E.R.T. at FSW is $25.00 and is offered daily, Monday through Friday.

T.A.B.E. (Tests of Adult Basic Education)

  • Most Technical and Vocational Colleges who offer career certificate programs require that entering students to take the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) prior to registration. TABE is a computerized reading, mathematics, and language basic skills exam, which takes approximately three hours to complete. Florida Legislature mandates that each adult student enrolled in a career certificate program must meet minimum basic skills (reading, mathematics, and language) levels before receiving a career certificate of completion for the program. In most cases, students who desire to enter these programs must take the TABE and score within two grade levels of the required standard prior to entering the program. After entering the program, a student not meeting the exit grade level requirements is given the opportunity to upgrade his/her skills in order to achieve the required grade levels prior to completion of the program. A student will not receive a career certificate of completion until he/she has met exit TABE scores (unless exempt).
  • Contact the specific school of interest to identify the times and price to complete the TABE assessment.
